Cowra Estate Wine

Cowra Estate crafts red and white wine from one of the best wine regions in central New South Wales, Australia.

Our Chardonnay is grown in Australia's first Chardonnay vineyard planted in Australia. Our granite soils allow for excellent growing conditions producing some of best everyday wines.

About

Our Story

History

The name Cowra is derived from the Aboriginal word meaning ‘eagle on the rocks.’ Huge granite boulders are scattered on the hills overlooking the township of Cowra.

Cowra Estate is a pioneer of viticulture in the region where Australia's Chardonnay boom was centred. The first Chardonnay vineyard was planted in 1972 at the Cowra Estate.  Len Evans and Brian Croser recognised the quality of Cowra early and Cowra provided fruit for Croser’s first Petaluma Chardonnay in 1977. Croser was lecturing at Riverina College of Advanced Education (now Charles Sturt University), Wagga, where he made the wine.

Terroir

By the Lachlan River in central Western N.S.W (four hours drive from Sydney), basalt and alluvial loam soils are enriched with minerals from the decaying granite. The well-draining  soils, combined with a perfect climate of abundant sunshine, long warm days together with cool nights and pure fresh water from the Lachlan River, produce wine with intense flavour and long length.

Flavour Profile

CHARDONNAY

Distinctive Chardonnay characteristics of tropical fruits, peach, melon and lemon butter due to the mineral rich soil. Subtle oak maturation combined with a hint of minerality leads to a crisp and lively finish.

MALBEC

Cool climate Malbec is an intense purple colour with bright juicy, plush flavours of blue fruits, hints of cocoa and sweet tobacco and velvety tannins.
